Speaking (Astro-) LOGICALLY about 2012

For years now the media has indulged in a feeding frenzy over what archaeologists and others have interpreted from ancient Maya glyphs as mathematical calculations surrendering this current year as ‘the end of time’. The common masses eat it up. But the Maya I know and respect for their wisdom do not look on 2012 as particularly significant. What they anticipate is not the end of any time cycle, but the beginning of a new calendar bestowed by Spirits sometime in the decades ahead. So, when looking for an Eagle’s Eye view of 2012, I turn to Donna Woodwell of Four Moon Astrology. She bases her computations for the year on the activities of Sun, Moon, planets, asteroids and stars. So what flash from the sky does Donna consider paramount? A sense the current year continues to unfold somewhat like the Great Depression coupled with the 1960’s, when revolution wafted through the air. Apparently Uranus and Pluto are already putting pressure on people to change—and change a lot—by discarding old social paradigms. Well, hallelujah and welcome Spirits of 2012!

Recently, I was invited to participate in a Fire Ceremony lead by a Guatamalan elder, a descendant of the great and ancient Maya. I find it so wonderful that these days while every Texan complains unendingly about the unending high summer temperatures, we are asked to come together and celebrate our relations, and the goodness in the relationship, to fire. Some could see this as the ultimate irony: in the midst of the hottest summer on record, we are being asked to appreciate the beauty and strength of fire. I can almost hear the collective sigh of everybody invited. “Not more heat,” they must be groaning. But I view the situation differently. Like a great cosmic joke, we are asked to be Heyoka or contrary—to quite our whining and do the opposite: appreciate and honor the intense, hellish heat we are living through by participating in the Maya Fire Ceremony. Maybe that is how the hot spell is broken. Personally, I happily anticipate the ceremonial event, having already made the paradigm shift to welcome, rather than bemoan the weather outside. In fact, I often giggle just thinking about our celebration of fire; what a great reminder to not only accept but embrace what we cannot change.

As ‘time travelers’ able to render the future familiar, Ancient Americans had to know that we who would live during this current transition time would get stuck in our ‘modern’ approach to pretty much everything. What I am talking about is the kind of societal glamorizing that sounds like this: “What we currently have, do and know is the best or only way to go. We must never surrender who and what we are, do and know—especially for what is unknown.”

A hundred years ago or more, miners would send a canary down into a mine shaft to see how the inner-earth air impacted the bird. If the canary floundered and died, the miners knew the space was not healthy for them. Now of course we have scientific instruments to measure air quality, along with the wholesomeness of water, food and many other commodities. We no longer trust that when birds or other elements of nature die or seemingly vanish, dangerous consequences are apt to follow. After all, we have scientists, men backed by big corporations and institutions to tell us to relax, put those aspects on a list of what is endangered and go about our lives as if…
