A Perspective on ‘Burning Women’

Not long ago, I received a link to Burning Women, a treatise on the European witch trials, and a recommendation to read it. Gladly, I did so. Because I teach seminars about the power of woman, I am well aware of the world-wide oppression and violence against women that has reigned for the last thousand years plus. And I have studied the European and American hunting season that was once open on women, branding them as witches, and murdering matriarchy one individual, family and community at a time. All this, just so the powerful institutions of patriarchal church and state might become firmly established, and hold sole leadership in our culture. Despite my previous knowledge, I still appreciated reading this succinct 25-page overview of womankind’s darkest days—truly centuries—since human arrival on the planet. And I highly recommend others find it on the web to read as well.
Brother Sky, Sister Earth and Grandmother Moon

Recently I paged through a spiritual book in which the author’s channeled Guides claimed that the moon is dead, as in devoid of spirit. So, okay, no sound and light are given off by the moon, but in cultures where feminine divinity is still very much alive, they recognize the moon is also very much alive. A repository of womanly spirit, she’s awash with soft and gentle waves of devic vibration that emanate below the threshold of our senses and the most refined scientific equipment. When the moon reflects no sunlight, her own spirit is purely creative (creator). At that time, her spirit functions in a manner similar to a ‘black hole’ or what tribal people might consider a ‘womb.’ In the dark phase, moon as creative force is intimately involved in the birth—and rebirth—of every life in our cosmic neighborhood. As such, the moon serves as Grand(est) Mother to the two youthful powers who animate all the rest of us: Brother Sky and Sister Earth.

In the Tribe we learn that when out-of-doors it is important to look for our shadows and feel the blowing wind on our cheeks. Paying attention to shadows helps to consciously connect to the sun in the day and the moon at night (which makes those ever-so-glorious lunar shadows). And the wind connects us to the Spirits that like downy soft feathers, ride even the slightest breezes to alight on any surface they brush against, including the skin of our human hands and faces. As a small boy on the reservation, my son would savor the strong prairie winds. He’d close his eyes, take a deep breath, and giggle. Over the gusts, he’d loudly proclaim: “I am kissed by Spirit!” The only other time my son ever felt such exhilaration was when lying on the ground and letting his spirit spread as far from his body as the clouds. To this day, thirty-some years later, the clouds still draw him in. Like his namesake suggests, the clouds enlighten him the way they might enlighten Eagle. And how exactly can that be, you might wonder. Well, some of you know because the clouds speak to you as well.

Traditionally among the Dakota and other Great Plains tribes, every step in making a tipi is ceremonially blessed. It requires first and foremost, a careful selection of young trees to ensure the structure is sound—physically and spiritually. The bark is stripped and then the poles are secured in the ground, making a circle. The positioning of the wood pieces is calibrated so they meet over the center of the circular lodge and each pole rests on another precisely half way up from the bottom. Such careful calibrations guarantee that the lower lengths which support the shelter are equal to the upper portions of the poles that reach toward the sky.

The Dakota share stories about deer as spiritual shape-shifters. If a human spirit wants to change astral form, it is easy to take that of a deer. As a deer the shifted soul can quickly run across the prairie or sneak forward to eavesdrop on other humans who may not suspect that inside the animal form sits a temporarily altered human consciousness. For westerners, the process of shape-shifting is way beyond the parameters of what is comprehensible. Still, such mind-stretching and spirit-morphing are the exact abilities expected of us during the transformative times ahead. At some point, we must discover the means to navigate not only the physical or material realms we’ve grown used to, but also the multitude of astral dimensions surrounding earth. This requires adapting in the shape-shifting sense of the word.

The glyphs of the Ancient Americans are prolific, and all over earth human figures are carved not only on temple walls but into rock flats, bluffs, mountain and hillsides. Anthropologists and archeologists have found that in North America alone, there are more than 65,000 sacred sites where the ancestors of antiquity left us long-standing messages. To modern people, the stone art seems little more than curious scratches that can be dismissed because nobody is around to tell us what the etched art means. This attitude demonstrates what Native Americans recognize: westerners place little value on anything that cannot be meaningfully interpreted. If the rock pictures hold no intellectual merit, then there’s nothing really to gain from them and they are of no consequence to us. This notion leads our so-called ‘progressive’ society down a pathway of ignorance.
