For years now the media has indulged in a feeding frenzy over what archaeologists and others have interpreted from ancient Maya glyphs as mathematical calculations surrendering this current year as ‘the end of time’. The common masses eat it up. But the Maya I know and respect for their wisdom do not look on 2012 as particularly significant. What they anticipate is not the end of any time cycle, but the beginning of a new calendar bestowed by Spirits sometime in the decades ahead. So, when looking for an Eagle’s Eye view of 2012, I turn to Donna Woodwell of Four Moon Astrology. She bases her computations for the year on the activities of Sun, Moon, planets, asteroids and stars. So what flash from the sky does Donna consider paramount? A sense the current year continues to unfold somewhat like the Great Depression coupled with the 1960’s, when revolution wafted through the air. Apparently Uranus and Pluto are already putting pressure on people to change—and change a lot—by discarding old social paradigms. Well, hallelujah and welcome Spirits of 2012!
2012: A Turtle Shell Year

For the Dakota, the umbilical cord that once connected a newborn to her/his mother is never thrown away. Instead, it dried and placed inside a soft doe-skin sack. The hide is carefully cut and stitched into the shape of a small turtle or salamander. The bag is decorated with bead work and usually strung on a thin piece of hide for donning in ceremony. It is kept for the life of the individual, promising a long and blessed walk-on-earth. This new year, 2012, I am ending a season of my life and starting another. During the past six years in Europe, I have watched all that once sustained me—physically, mentally, emotionally and most importantly, spiritually—slowly dry up. Ever-swelling astral interference has made for a difficult weaning process. Still, I like to imagine the European cycle of time provides an ‘umbilicus’ that can be built upon. Perhaps, by comparison to the last few years, the coming ones will seem wrapped in softest doeskin. It’s as if inherent in the soul, endurance is assured—like somehow we all wear around us a supple turtle shell charm.
New Earth’s ‘Due Date’ Delayed

Proving once again that certainty is the enemy of the mental body, and that in times of transition our motto must be “scrap the plan,” the Maya elders met (in 2008!) to renounce westerner’s solar interpretations of their lunar calendar. In other words, we can forget about 2012 and join the Maya in expecting Earth’s renewal at a later date.
